“Switching Can Be Clearly Ruled Out” – Sporting Director Dismisses Recent Spurs Transfer Speculation

|

With reports circulating this week that Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino had ‘placed a call’to the representative of Mainz striker, Jean-Philippe Mateta, to try and add a personal touch to any January transfer window negotiations – the story did really seem like an agent’s attempt to talk up his player and secure a better deal (again) at his current club, even if a move didn’t come off.

Report Claims Pochettino Adds A Personal Touch To Help Spurs Beat Southampton To January Target

Maybe I’m just overly cynical?

With the claims being made about a chat between Poch and Pierre-Henri Bovis, Mainz Sporting Director, Rouven Schroeder, has added more to the speculation by getting himself quoted in the German Press and outlet Main-Spitze have him rubbishing suggestions of a January departure.

“There is definitely no contact at the moment and no interest from England, and JP feels very well in Mainz and therefore extended his contract until 2023. A theme will definitely not be the winter transfer period, so switching can be clearly ruled out, so there’s no point in talking about ominous supposed pain thresholds that did not exist and do not exist.”

With reports suggesting that Newcastle United were knocked back in a 28million Euro bid over the summer, it seems incredibly unlikely that Spurs would get into that kind of bidding war for a player who hasn’t kicked a ball in anger so far this season owing to injury – even if his goal scoring record for a 22-year-old had previously been pretty good.
